·         Undertone bullish sentiment in the market. Record inflows from foreign institutional investors, progress on COVID-19 vaccines globally and signs of a nascent economic recovery in the country. Moreover, strong FIIs buying interest and better than expected November IIP data will be positive sentiment in the market.

CHEERS TO THE WOMEN PROFESSIONALS

A challenge that organisations face in present scenario is the retention of women employees at mid and senior levels, when they are faced with domestic responsibilities.
Latest Industry trend shows that head-hunters have specifically been directed to look for women candidates for senior positions. A lot of MNC’s want to infuse gender diversity into the Indian workforce, especially at the upper echelons. As a result, women at the senior levels are being offered a premium consulting fee of 25 to 30 % of the annual salary for hiring women against the generally given 15 to 20 %. The story does not end here. In order to retain female talent, organisations have taken many extra measures, such as adoption leave (which enables employees to avail of three month’s paid leave when they adopt a child). They are also increasing offering to the employees the opportunity to work part-time or from home, under special circumstances. Other options include telecommuting (where in the employees can work for one or two days from home), special relaxation room, lactation room, and car parking for moms-to-be.

TCS is clear that it will not break the service record of women who discontinue work due to family commitments, allowing them to return at later stage. The company also allows flexibility of roles through job rotation across businesses, practice and functions. It has launched DAWN (Diversity And Women’s Network) which offers a framework for the professional growth of women associates. Cisco has WAN (Women’s Action Network) a volunteer network of women who have similar interest and concerns. PepsiCo has set up Talent council to help women come together and share experiences.

Harrisons Malayalam Ltd., an integrated agriculture operation giant, is India's largest producer of rubber, South India's largest cultivator of Tea and perhaps the largest farmer of Pineapple in the region even have more than 50% Women as their employees in the workforce. This enlightens their initiative in maintaining workforce diversity.

As gender mainstreaming is gradually taking place within all organisations, it is important that individual staff members take responsibility to contribute to this effort in any way they can. It can be even through a small gesture of providing opinion about the same.

News Analysis - Media firms more dominant than Creatives

The importance of media has increased as the world has entered new phases of marketing. Media had been the pushing factor for the endorsement for almost all the products. But where is the focus of media going now? Media agencies have been competing against each other and have forgotten to focus on the most important function, consumer attraction. The media have gained lot of importance mainly due to 2 reasons. First is the focus on impacting business results. Some media have realized the opportunity and stressed on outcomes rather that output. Second, is the focus on the relationship between the brand and the consumer. The goal of brands should not be to increase awareness but to reduce choice. A proper media is a combination of idea creators. When there is an absence of idea creators, it creates a hole in the media wherein, it lets other competitors to pierce through and throw it out of the competition. So importance should be given to the idea creators. Rather than simply competing against each other, it is better they combine and then create better ideas. It is not just the product that the consumers are buying. They are buying the ideas along with the product. When they are competing wit each other, it is the brand that is the looser. Ultimately, it is neither the product nor the producer who is the King; it is the consumer who is the real King.

education in India : on the verge of change

Friends, one of the main reason why we chose SCMS as our destination is that ,the pgdm degree provided by this institution is approved by AICTE and is well recognized in the industry and this is one of the few belief we still hold strong . but not all the students opting for a MBA have this minimum assurance . There are more than 4000 engineering colleges and atleast 2500 b-school running in this country .But in 60% of the educational institution terms like donation, capitation fee ,management quotas are quite common.
In this regard the decision of the union cabinet to provide both imprisonment for 3 years and a fine of 50 lakhs is an admirable step towards educational reform in India . This can act like a fear factor for those people who has made 'education' into a 'fraud'.

"Haathi' is not always a "saathi"

we can agree on the the fact that our own national animal ' Tiger' is going to be in endangered list and the shrinkage of natural habitat is a major reason for this . But those who pleaded for ' no boundary' for animals should think twice . because if we wont keep them within in boundaries they will surely invade our boundary and definitely rush into our own society .it is what happening in places like 'chandaka' in orissa , where safety of the villagers from the wild elephants is a major concern for the administrators.
we need to understand that our world is not quite similar as the world of animals .that's why they are called 'wildlife' and to protect this wild life we need "zoo' where we are protected from them as well as they are protected from us .but there should be every effort to provide a artificial environment where, they can feel at home

RBI hikes rate by 25 bps

RBI hikes rates by 25 bps; home, auto loan rates may go up

Rattled by a spiralling inflation, the central bank raised the benchmark short-term interest rates—repo and reverse repo—by 25 basis points.

While the RBI communiqué was issued well after market hours in India, US stocks slipped soon after the announcement as traders felt it was a signal that monetary authorities would be quick in withdrawing the post-Lehman stimulus.

Banks pay the repo rate to borrow from RBI and receive the reverse repo rate for parking surplus funds with the central bank. The repo rate is up from 4.75% to 5% while the reverse repo rate is up from 3.25% to 3.5% with immediate effect.

Banks are expected to take a call on raising the deposit and lending rates after the March 31 financial closure. According to Chanda Kochhar, CEO of India’s second-biggest lender, ICICI, the bank “will wait and see the credit offtake and systemic liquidity to assess the medium-term impact on lending and borrowing rates”. “Currently, there is ample liquidity in the market,” she said. Indian Overseas Bank chairman SA Bhat said, “I do not expect interest rates to go up in March... if at all, it may happen next month.”

Mortgage giant HDFC said unless there is an increase in the cost of funds, the institution will not increase interest rates. “In the short term, cost of funds is unlikely to change much... It’s more a signal,” said Keki Mistry, vice-chairman and managing director of HDFC.

But for RBI, “anchoring inflation expectations and containing overall inflation have become imperative”. “Headline WPI inflation on a year-on-year basis at 9.9% in February 2010 has exceeded our baseline projection of 8.5% for end-March 2010,” said RBI.

Moreover, the central bank indicated that it favoured rate hikes in small doses rather than pushing through stronger measures at a later stage when inflationary expectations deepen. But, banks and bond houses already hit by rising yields, will have to provide for higher mark to market losses as they close the financial year in a fortnight. “It was a surprise that it happened before March 31,” said Pradeep Madhav, MD of STCI Primary Dealer.

After Friday’s rate hike, the market was divided on what RBI governor Duvvuri Subbarao could do when he presents the policy on April 20. “Some are not ruling out another quarter point hike in April 20... in the next few weeks, the market will continue to bet on this. Immediately, we will see yields going up and the rupee rising 10 paise against the dollar,” said a trader. In its release, RBI said it “will continue to monitor macroeconomic conditions, particularly the price situation, and take further action as warranted”.

News Analysis - Uninor Opts Out of 3G Bid

About the News

The Communication Ministry of India opened bids for 3G Technology & set the floor price at Rs 3500 crores. The last date for application was March 19 & the Ministry expects to get about Rs 35000 crores from its existing 11 to 12 operators. There will be 3 slots available each in the auctioned 17 areas & 4 in remaining 5 areas. The operations are expected to be carried on from September 1, 2010. All the leading operators in the country like Bharti Airtel, RCOM, Vodafone-Essar, Tata Tele-Services placed bids except Uninor. The Managing Director of Uninor, Mr. Stein Erik had made it clear that the company does not see a business case for bidding for 3G airwaves. Also globally many countries have already started deployment of 4G technology & Uninor also wants to evaluate it.

Analysis

The cost of deployment of 3G technology is very high for the operators. In many countries, companies had paid astronomical figures for the purchase of 3G rights & had been left with little money for building its infrastructure. Also the US company, Qualcomm is already in plans to bid fro the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) at the end of this year. If it succeeds in it, India might even have 4G technology as early as next year along with the other countries. The company is also making chipsets combining both the 3G & 4G technology so that the user can switch between the 3G & 4G networks. So, if Uninor straight away implements the 4G technology, it can avoid a lot of cost on purchase of 3G technology & can surely make some serious business out of the 4G technology.

Wo(e)mens' Bill ??

For nearly a decade, the Women's Reservation Bill has been a political raw nerve. It has always triggered heated debates in Parliament and outside. I just wonder why Women's Reservation Bill is so controversial. Is it because its name itself suggests that it’s meant for women??
Begin women, I can agree for reservation stating …..
-Increased political participation of women will help them to fight against the abuse, discrimination and inequality they suffer from
-The experience of panchayat and community showed that women had worked for uplift of the villages and community.
-MP’s will no longer be claim attachment to one single constituency.
But would it be fair?
Don’t the women’s reservation bills would have impact on the caste struggle? Is it really a solution to the existing problem? Is it really required to plead for reservation within reservation?
Millions of poor women face steep odds, with shorter schooling, worse nutrition and a literacy rate more than 20% lower than men. So, I believe those demanding reservation should first take up issues like female foeticide, women's literacy, malnourishment of the girl child, and so on, if they want to bring real change in our society and change the outlook of society towards women. Reservation is definitely not a solution to the problem. If at all reservation is required it should be reservation of women in political parties than in Parliament. We have to give women a proper space in a significant way in the democratic setup.
So it’s up to us either ask for some aid or try means to make the climb up the ladder easier for women in the political realm.

women reservation.........Is not it a plea for a full toss ball?

If you consider yourself as a quality player against which country you would like to hit a century.....a team like Bermuda where you face no challenge or against a team like Australia against whom you are tested in every step? But Indian women want the first option where they would get all the unfair chance and unjustifiable advantage against all......sorry I mean to say 'the men'.

For god sake try and try hard to get success . Don't just make a law which is already there in our culture(women first). Why can't women don't recognize the very fact that they cannot compete with men in every field.

scoring a six from a full toss ball is easy and it wont affect your strike-rate .Moreover it will increase your strike rate but the very fact is that ,it wont be remembered for long time.

Womens reservation- A landmark or Historical blunder

hi friends
First of all I would like to ask everyone " What should we consider while we elect an MP\MLA?". We should consider a person who can fight for our basic needs, development and overall well being of the society. So i would like to ask -if a person can fulfill all our needs, do we need to differentiate between men and women when we decide to elect an MP\MLA. what we should look should be the the credentials or the attitude of the person and not his\her Gender.

No pride in Women's Reservation Bill..

It may make for great politics for one leader after the other to give sound bites on the bill but that does not take away from the fact that it is the easy way out for a nation which 62 years after independence has failed to give its citizens (read women) the wherewithal to grab their due without reservation.

Because in the end the need for women’s reservation arises in the mindset and after all the promises of universal education and compulsory primary education, somehow women, as young girls, always seem to miss out on the opportunity their brothers or male friends get — unless of course they are lucky enough to belong to the rare breed of families who take pride in raising parkati women.

And a slipshod reservation foisted on a country which is still far from giving women their due will only result in the proliferation of sarpanch patis who are husbands of heads of panchayats where the post is reserved for women. In many villages across the country the real power rests in the SP. There are better-known examples of the wife holding fort while the man is away from the scene, but anyone believing that it is a sign of the woman's empowerment will only be deluding themselves.

Any self-respecting woman would want to be where she is because she deserves to be there, not because of her gender. If the state has failed to bring women to that level, then there is hardly anything reservation can achieve.

The same way as the notion of a woman President has done little to empower Indian women as a whole and it is unlikely that the notion of a woman Lok Sabha Speaker will go much further. Because in the end that’s what they are — just notions. I do not see the Women's Reservation Bill becoming anything more than that.

My logic against reservation is somewhat similar to what was proferred at the time of the OBC reservation issue — affirmative action is the need of the hour.

That could be in the form of the Laadli scheme that the Delhi government started for girl children of families with annual income of below one lakh — the government pays certain amounts of money linked to the girl’s educational progress so that by the time she is ready to go to college there is a corpus of Rs 1 lakh available to her — or CBSE’s scholarship scheme for the single girl child or any other forms of incentive to encourage families to give the same kind of facilities to girls as they give to boys.

Reservation is an acknowledgment of the failure of the state and the political system represented by the likes of Sharad Yadav who talk social justice and gender injustice in the same breath.

Let’s at least have the good sense to feel ashamed of it. All sort of comments are invited..........

Debate on Women's Bill

heyy guys! It was fun bloggin in de last trimester. a really diff experience. must say dat.. :) just tot y not 2 continue wit it in de comin days as wel.. :) so wat a start v had for the new trim. a mind blowin debate on a real hot topic. It was fun a diff experience bein a part of it. just njoyed it to de fullest.. :) n yea a really knowledge sharin ground.. :) there was a ton lotta views from each n every corner of the class. ppl luv debatin lik nytin in our class. at de end of it v neva ended up in conclusion. dis sort of topics can be debated for days n days... what i feel is a bill bein introduced should provide sum gain for the nation in the future. it is not a matter of reservation for women or not. the point is that the ultimate result of it should provide development of our nation.. there is no guarantee that introducin reservation will do ny gud for the politics or the nation. it is only going to brin in more corruption n power for the elite group. thus providin reservation is of no use in a country like india..

Bt Brinjal as explained by Mr.Mohan Kumar

We got a very elaborate knowledge on transgenic biotechnology, which is in hype now a days because of the issues associated with Bt Brinjal, via speeches of Scientist Mohan Kumar. Very beautifully he answered all the controversies associated with commercialization of Bt Brinjal. He raised a very strong points related to Bt cotton. As per his words - "No issue is created by the media when it comes to the commercialization of Bt fibers, but if the same technology is applied to edibles...there is always a problem.
I would like to put forward few points which he mentioned regarding the topic. He mentioned that Bt Brinjal was NOT -
  1. A research on demand- the research was carried out because of any demand or any thing of that sort.
  2. Novel Concept- It was not a novel concept
  3. Proper Management- Clearity of intentions in carring out the test of transgenic brinjal was made to the common public
  4. Marketing management- Before it could be properly communicated, media played it part.
Lastly in conclusion i would like to give a brief crust of what he conveyed. Science and technology needs moral and social support from the general public and the media so as to keep walking on the path of success.

Sharing the experience of FISAT fest...

All our friends who went for AMRITA Fest where sharing there experience with us...it was then my FISAT Fest moments got freshened. First of all...a great homage to all who put there heart and soul in the Fest...
All I could make out through there conversation was that they all noticed some cultural difference as while comparing AMRITA with SCMS. "In AMRITA school students share a very friendly relationship...Dean and Directors were asking the students from all colleges to take snaps with them."- but it is also true that in Corporate world we won't be getting such friendly scenario. Every one is professional and people joining them is also expected to behave professionally. However, different people different perspective.
I wish to share my experience of FISAT fest. I will four other friend went as a team for Marketing Game. Its was an awesome experience. We learnt a lot out of it. The whole fest was for 2 days with various eliminating stages. At a stage we were asked to prepare a model of a product (mainly a body lotion) and prepare a hoarding also. It was fun- cardboard, colors, pen, pencil scale chart paper were the only means provided by them. We qualified. One of my most adventures and exciting stage was when we were taken to a busy street and asked to sell a pen and a pencil to the highest possible price. Mind it my friends it was the most amusement period and a memorable experience of my life.
At that point of time we really felt that we were in the field of marketing. It was the first professional interaction of our with common public. We qualified all rounds and we stood 2nd in Marketing Game.
I would request each one of you who are going through my blog...Please participate at least in any one such competition you will surely learn much above text knowledge.

my name is......?

Hello friends hope you have seen the movie ‘my name is khan’. Don’t you think this movie is a reply what shahrukh has to give for what happened to him at an airport in America…, ok what ever it may be leave it,shahrukh is rich enough to make a movie and express himself. But there are many other people who are being stereotyped for the wrong doings of some people towards the humanity. I believe there are only two types of people in the world good people and bad people, this is also said in the movie, its really sad that people fight in the name of religion, race,.. I don’t know why people have to fight for the security of their god and religion,,,,, I I believe if any of the god’s feel insecure they are strong enough to solve their problems,,,, there are so many social problems in the world, people are dying of hunger, the world is wounded we are scared to move out freely. But we are busy fighting religious wars. I feel so bad how can people have so much hatred for others that turn them into bloodthirsty beasts. At last I would like to pray for the peace of people who have lost their lives in the recent blasts in our home[world]. I also pray to god to give wisdom and love in the hearts of people for their fellow beings, rise above religion and love one another.

Michael Jackson truly sang “we are the world we are the children we are the ones to make a better place, so lets start giving, heal the world, make a better place for you and for me and for the entire HUMAN BEINGS”.
