BT Brinjal should be given a chance

Hello everyone,
By this time everyone has got a fair idea about the fuss created by BT Brinjal throughout the length and breadth of the country.People are going for fasting and showing demonstration against the commercialisation of the BT brinjal,on the other hand the government is trying to convince the farmers and make them understand the various benefits that can be derived from its usage.
As we all know that India has its legacy in the field of agriculture from time immemorial and it also contributes to around 26 %(84,50,200 tons) of the global production of brinjal,I think such an invention should be accepted by mass.According to the policymakers,BT brinjal seeds will be available to the farmers at nominal cost and will also help cost-effective remedy to the fruit and shoot borer pest (FSB) that damages up to 60% of their crop, with no tangible harm to man, animal or soil.
According to the most reliable authorities of environment issues, the US Environment Protection Agency(USEPA),BT crops does not pose any significant risk to the environment as well as to the human health. The scientists of the company that developed Bt brinjal, Mahyco(Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company), testify that since 2001, studies have been conducted on the various health and safety aspects of Bt proteins and have confirmed that BT Brinjal is in no way different from the conventional brinjal.
So I think that in an era of innovation, such a gift from genetic engineering should not be discarded without giving it a fair chance to showcase its benefits.Anyways final decision regarding this issue will taken by Mr. Jairam Ramesh,Union minister for environment and the other policymakers by Feb,10.So lets see what happens.

  2. not like that siju....scientist tells us that we don't know enough about the effects of insertion of alien genes on the recipient organism, and about the risk of transfer of those genes into human organ system;and hence the impact on human and animal health and environment....there for we must not allow GM foods to be cultivated commercially.....JAIRAM RAMESH is only minister for environment and not a genetic engineer or agricultural scientist...how we can believe the words of politician....who change there opinion minute by minute.....

  3. To Nishad....
The mass acceptance of BT brinjal is not on the basis of a mere decision taken by Mr.Jairam Ramesh. No country can start the commercialization of any genetically modified fruit/vegetable without the accredition of US Environment Protection Agency(USEPA).And BT Brinjal is also not an exception. The whole thing that govt. has to do about it is that a proper counseling of the farmers at the grass root level and making them understand the benefit that they can reap after adopting BT without, compromising the safety of themselves as well as the environment.
