Kerala Responds-BT Brinjal

The Kerala Agriculture-Environment collective has called for a state wise fast on the Martyrs day january 30th 2010 with the message of remembering the Mahatma, stopping BT Brinjal and Protecting food and National sovereignity.

The call for the fast given at a press conference by the minister for agriculture Sri Mullakara ratnakarn,Smt Sugathakumari.poet and environmentalist and Dr V.S. Vijayan,Chairman,Kerala state Biodiversity Board.

The venue was decided to be the Martyrs Square at trivandrum and there will be other venues as well.

The minister also added that Kerala and many other states following Kerala's stand have decided not to allow BT Brinjal as it vindicates Kerala's stand.

According to Sugathakumari there are basically threen reasons why BT Brijal can not be allowed:-

firstly an indipendent goverment owned testing facility has not done the tests, and it was based on only privately generated data.

secondly he said that this shoul d not be introduced in any agro biodiversity hotspots,as it will destroy the indigenous variety.

thirdly he said that consumption of thoroughly untested BT Brinjal is like a case of chronic dossage issue.
