Going through the newspapers, TV and the internet we can see so much of SRK these days.. SRK and the IPL , SRK vs Shiv Sena , SRK and the much awaited "My name is Khan"...it makes me wonder if this is some kind of a marketing strategy or i don't know if its the excessive management study we are going through at SCMS that makes me think this way ;)..
Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots was in the news too for some time for both good and bad reasons...the movie was a big hit but came with it issues with writer Chetan Bhagat..makes me wonder again...is it all business???And 3 idiots was a huge success on its own anyway...may be thats why Chetan Bhagat was not on news for long.
Is this just the Bollywood way of business....NO!! I don't think so...I think corporates also are targeting the exploitation of emotional appeal to make money, making everyone feel a part of the entire process through debates and discussions...giving everyone the freedom to express..making each one feel important and respected by the simple act of hearing what all have to say and by getting people involved in various initiatives.
AIRCEL's "Save our tigers" initiative is one of the recent activities and there are others like IDEA's new eco-friendly advertisements. Most corporates have been getting more and more involved in CSR activities with many of them coming out with innovative campaigns..Some corporates are getting into social cause advertisements. Now CSR activities and social cause advertisements are different..Examples of a few social cause advertisements would be Tata Tea's Jaago Re, HUL, ITC have all launched social cause advertisements...again i can't stop questioning...is it because they really care? Or is it just another trend in marketing practice???
The entertainment sector is no different...the evident increase in reality shows on TV..MTV's HERO HONDA Roadies,Vodafone Splitsvillae , Airtel connected, Kurkure Desi Beats Rock on,Samsung Mobile MTV Gang Next..more and more companies are going the MTV way....MTV's music is definitely missing and the M defines no more music but "MORE MONEY"....Definitely entertainment but more than that...it's business...making it all look real, relating to people making each one feel close to the show.
It wouldn't be fair on my part to say all are the same...there are a few non profit initiatives...Times of India's Aman ki Asha, BBC World Service Trust, NACO(National AIDS Control Organisation), Doordhashan and All India Radio with the first ever mass media campaign aimed at increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS in India. These are just to name a few..
Business or no business, the consequences are more debates and discussions, more media coverage, more campaigns, eco friendly initiatives, CSR activities and ofcourse more money!!
Lets make better world a reality...check out pepsi's one people commercial by the way..it sure did appeal to me for some reason...
Congrats on the good work...What I personally feel is that every aspect of our day 2 day life has a pinch of business in it....right from getting up from the bed till going back to sleep ,an individual plans his/her activities in such a manner that at the end of the day everyone wants to see themselves as a gainer....But how??? here comes the question of competition....and one can easily win the game of business through the most lethal weapon called the 'emotion'...And the most swift operator of this weapon are none other than the MBA grads like us....One year down the line we all will be such operators in various fields of business activities manipulating and playing with the emotions of our customers in order to give maximum benefit to the organization as well as ourselves....But as a student of SCMS let us all take a pledge that we will always give ethics a prime weightage in any activity undertaken by us .....But again it is a personal belief....keep blogging!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Congratulations!!!!
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I do agree that CSR which stands for Corporate Social Responsibility, itself become a marketing strategy amongst the corporate fraternity.
But when I give a second thought to this, I sense that even if a firm wants to do CSR fairly, there lies a profit perspective, which may not be measured in monetary terms.
So when we talk about Aircel's 'Save our Tiger' or Tata's 'Jaago Re' etc, the question raised is 'Do they really care?'
So what if they do not care, but if they carry out the activities to the satisfaction of all concerned, then it is a profit for them in the long run and to the benefit for the social or environmental causes. Again I would like to mention that profit may not be in monetary terms.
Well about the SRK issue let me take a dig onto it in my next blog.
Anyways thanks a lot

hiiiiiiiiiiii.......... the question u ask i.e do they really care???? wen ITC opens up cancer centers do they care? u say TATA's JAAGO RE CAMPAIGN IS a marketing stratergy and AMAN KI ASHA is not a stratergy .......... how do u differentiate b/w both.......... now any company taking up a csr activity and wen its promoting it letting everyone know we tend to draw the conclusion tat they dont care............ now take for e.g TAJ hotel staff wearing saree woven in rural INDIA..... its a csr activity and u come to know only wen u go through TATA website............ but JAAGO RE campaign again a TATA product whose ads on t.v........ see many ppl are reluctanty about voting and it does create an awareness in the so called youth way......... so i dont know how do u diffrntiate b/w a real csr or csr as a marketing strategy.................. i am happy if they r doing it and if thr is some good in it........
ReplyDeletesiju don't be so cynical..atleast they are taking some initiative which each n every one has failed to do..Motivate and encourage when some one takes a noble initiative rather than criticising others which is the easiest job in the world..jst think what have U n I done to society..leave society what good have u done to ur family?
ReplyDelete@nishad........ first of all how do u know that i haven't done any good to my family??????2nd i dont need to tell you what i have done or not.... i dont need to give justifications to u man..... and plz read before u comment......."i am happy if they r doing it and if thr is some good in it" i have copied it and pasted here for u to read this.....................
