Hi friends how are you?
Today in Kerala parents are opting for private English medium schools instead of government schools. Parents are taking away their children from government schools day by day. If this trend continues the state government may reduce their investment in education. There is the clear message from the state. Parents prefer private English education rather than government school education.
Chinnappan Gasper assistant professor at the Centre for Development Studies in Kerala says that there are humdreds of government schools buildings, complete with furniture and infrastructure but there are no children. There is a message in it for the policy makers. Why are the central and state governments continuing to invest in education ? The central government invests around Rs. 275 crore in school education in the state but the results are not like that . Kerala's director of public information, Mohammad Hanish denies all these things. He says that parenrs have more optoins for their children's bright future in government schools including extra curricular, multimedia, ad related activities. Gasper who has studied the education system from 1973 points out that the number of enrollment is decreasing in government school. He says that around 61% boys and 63% girls dropped from government schools during 2008-09. He says that it is difficult to say how many drop out from government as well as private English medium schools. Only Sarva Siksha Abhiyan prevents the state government from closing down government schools.
Gsper says their existmajority in the state who can afford private education because the daily wages touch the Rs. 250-350 levels and around Rs. 250 is needed for private schools. He als says that the breadwinner does not have a major loan repayment and is not wasting money on drinking.
Gasper feels that if more students opt for private schoola the government should offer scholarships to them rather than run hundreds of government schools that are unviable.
