What is Bt Brinjal ?
Bt brinjal is a transgenic brinjal created out of inserting a gene[cry 1Ac] from soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis into brinjal. The insertion of gene into the brinjal cell in young cotyledons has been done through an Agrobacterium-mediated vector, along with other genes like promoters, markers etc. This is said to give the Brinjal plant resistance against lepidopteran insects like the Brinjal Fruit, Shoot Borer and Fruit Borer. it is reported that upon ingestion of Bt toxin by insect, there would be disruption of digestive processes, ultimately resulting in the death of the insect. This process in biological term is called lysis.
What are the health hazards that could be probably caused by Bt Brinjal ?
There is a significant evidence from past experiences of genetically modified seeds that with the advantages it also brings undesirable results due to gene mutation. Bt Brinjal is no exception it also has various health hazard as expected by scientist.
Health Hazards
1)several studies on Bt crops in particular and GM(genetically modified) crops in general show that are many potential hazards in foods bio-engineered in this manner. GM- fed animals in various studies have shown that there are problems with growth, organ devlopment and damage, immune responsiveness.
2)Bt toxin had caused powerful immune responses and abnormal cell growth in mice.
3)it can cause severe damage to brain, liver, kidney, heart and many more dreadful diseases which we might not have heard about.
Example of hazard from past.
In 1989 a dietary supplement L-trepthophan a GM food led to death of nearly 100 peoples in America. It caused sickness and disability in another ten thousand people.
Issue evolved regarding Bt Brinjal in India
The promoters say that Bt Brinjal will be beneficial to farmers because it is insect resistance, increases yields, is more cost effective and will have minimal environmental impact. On other hand, concerns about Bt Brinjal relate to its possible adverse impact on human health and bio-safety, livelihoods and biodiversity. How ever GEAC (Genetic Engineering Approval Committee) the clearing hose for all genetically modified crops in India gave it environmental clearance. The final decision from the environment ministry is expected in February 2010
