Bt brinjal, a genetically modified strain created by India's number one seeds company Mahyco in collaboration with American multinational Monsanto, claims to improve yields and help the agriculture sector. But there are mixed views from the scientists who are working for the government, farmers, environmental activists etc.
A study by French scientist Gilles-Eric Seralini says the tests conducted by Mahyco, the company producing Bt brinjal, were simply not valid and raised serious health concerns. Besides the environment hazards, activists allege that the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) has shown a bias towards companies like the Monsanto. Amidst all this Mahyco claims that Bt brinjal is resistant to pests and therefore will need less use of pesticides and insecticides, reducing the cost of production.
Views of Environment Activists
Environment activists says the effect of GM (genetically modified) crops on rats have shown to be fatal for lungs and kidneys. It is dangerous to introduce these experimental foods into the market without proper research. Environmentalist Vandana Shiva has also pointed out that the tests have been done by the safe microbial Bt. which has been used as an organic pesticide for decades. The tests merely show the safety of the organic spray. They have not looked into the risks that transgenic Bt. creates.
Views of Politicians
Environmental Minister Jairam Ramesh said that the GEAC is a statuatory body but the crucial decisions relating to the human safety need to be taken by the govt. A. Ramadoss. Union Heath Minister during the period 04-09 has also opposed the introduction of BT Brinjal. On the other hand the Science and Technology Minister Prithviraj Chavan has made it clear that he will stay by the trials done by the regulatory bodies.
My Views
We have seen that there has been mixed responses from all spheres of the country. Any genetically modified crop should be put to various tests which are convincing for all. As of now the tests which have been done has only brought in more doubts in the minds of people. Some say that it will be good to introduce to the GM crop but others say the tests are not satisfactory and might have harmful effects. It should also be noted that the European Union have followed strict norms and the countries in the Union have banned the GM crops. Considering all this the govt should not rush off to introduce the GM crop. They should go for more tests which are effective and environment friendly. If the results turn positive then they should implement BT Brinjal.
