Bt Brinjal Issue-Thrown Light on

Bt Brinjal
It is a transgenic brinjal created out of inserting a gene from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis into Brinjal. This is said to give Brinjal plant reisstance against insects like Shoot Borer and Fruit Borer. Reports say that ingestion of Bt toxin by the insect would disrupt the digestion process, resulting in the death of the insect.
But the other side of the coin talks about the potential health hazards posed by this hybrid. The genes inserted into modified food survive digestive processes and are transferred into the human body. They are known to have transferred themselves into intestinal bacteria too.
Things were taken into streets eversince the plan to commercialize Bt Brinjal in India was on cards. A lot of oppositions and protests were put up against that proposal. Finally the show has been curtained down with Indian goverment showing a red flag to the proposal and Mr Jairam Ramesh, Environment Minister mentioned that the proposal be deferred until an extensive study is done in that regard.
