"there is no change. We will start selling Prius in India in March," said Mr Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor. The company launched its latest generation of the car during the Auto Expo in New Delhi.
The main problem faced by the company was the heavy import duty. Prius will be the second hybrid car to be lauched in India after Honda's Civic Hybrid. The import duty of 110% resulted in a steep price tag of nearly Rs 20 lakh for the Hybrid, which hit sales. Subsequently, Honda had to clear the backlog of 250 units at a substantial discount.
"The market for hybrid cars is very small in India. Toyota is launched the Prius in India as a green statement and I hope they will start retailing it as per plan, after addressing the issues," said Mr Homazd Sorabjee, Editor, Auto Car India.
