Amidst a mesmerizing ambiance marked by a resplendent show of color and splendor Canada inaugurated the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics in an indoor stadium (BC place Stadium). The “landscape of dreams” was all ready to unveil an exciting opening ceremony with happiness and positive vibe, but hours before the official inauguration a disaster struck. A young athlete lost his life during the training session. Flags were lowered half-mast during the opening ceremony.
Nodar Kumaritashvili, Georgian luge athlete, lost his life in a tragic accident. The 21-year-old athlete was just on the doorway of living his dream of “being an Olympian”. The dream for which all athletes strive hard, while some of them succeed in making it a reality, some don’t. Nodar Kumaritashivili at such a young age had actually made it a reality.
What can be said about this, an athlete who trained all his life, painstakingly fought the hurdles and difficulties to get in to the national Olympic squad and on the eve of the D-day everything is shattered, the soul leaves a hardworking, energetic, enthusiastic young sportsman’s body, a family’s prayers and their commitment they had put in to see their son as a national hero smashed to smithereens, and a nations dream splintered.
Hope these kinds of accidents never happen again in a sports event. Olympic committee has ordered an enquiry in to the accident; we may have to wait a bit to know what actually caused this tragedy.
As in Hindu mythology and other religions that believe in reincarnation or rebirth after death, hope this soul takes a new body, takes birth in a new form and becomes the best Olympian that the world has ever seen……………but for now nothing can suppress the sorrow that Nodar Kumaritashvilli’s family is going through. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.
